Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life

GOOD NEWS!

'It is more blessed to give than to receive.' Acts 20:35

Here’s something we and our three oldest grandchildren, 9 years old, 8 and 4 years old, are working on. For those of you with children this might be something to consider.

Every so often we go shopping, usually at the dollar store, value village or the like. Routinely, they’re allowed two items each. On this occasion, an alternative was discussed with them. Instead of two items each, the idea was to get one item each and whatever money was left, we’d put towards a sponsorship child. It was explained the money would go toward food, clean water, clothes, medical care and schooling. They thought it was a good idea. I was hoping they'd still think so, once actually shopping. I also explained, when the time came to send the money we would also include letters and pictures of them as well.

You know, by 'going out or ordering in' once less a month or cutting out some junk food, it’s amazing what can happen.

It’s an important lesson in principle and practice about life, for the grandchildren in more ways than we often realize. They get involved personally.

The importance of this, when so many kids these days are born and raised with electronic 'gear' in their hands or ears cannot be stressed enough. Increasingly, we live, play, work and think in a 'virtual world' many times mindless about reality. Houston, we have a problem. For us, this was a step in getting back down to earth. It would help teach our grandchildren that there are 'real' kids out there that are in desperate need, who 'really' need them.

First step is to switch off the 'desensitizer', bring down the shuttle safely and get their feet back on the ground. Our kids could learn from an early age there is something they can do. They can make a difference. Last, but not least, our children learn not to take it for granted that those other children out there, could some day be them. Call it the ‘sponsorship pot’ at the end of the rainbow which any third world child would love to see, not just try to imagine.

It helps that we have pictures of the three sponsor children on the fridge so they can relate what they are doing to who they are helping. You can't open the fridge door without facing up to them and yourself at the same time. Looking into their eyes, seeing their faces, is incredibly humbling yet encouraging.

Trust me, it's a good thing. Sometimes, more than we know, our consciences need to look into a mirror. Think of it as a reflection of life that both reminds us and brings out that little bit of something special in each of us, that spurs us to help someone. It starts with just one, the first one.

As it now stands, we have $5.50 to build on, with purpose in our hearts.

When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, "Rabbi, when did you come here?"

Jesus answered them and said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him." John 6:24-27

Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'

Then Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven.  For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."

Then they said to Him, "Lord, give us this bread always."

And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. John 6:31-36

What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds?

Can such faith save him?

Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?

In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds."

Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do. James 2:14-18

So, what brought this on? Well, for one thing, seems whenever we watched kid’s programs on TV, every time a toy ad was shown it was, ‘Grandpa can you get me that?’, followed by the many reasons they ’must’ have it. I would talk to them about the plight of the poor children elsewhere, seemingly without any real success. Then one day very recently, the two youngest grandchildren came to grandpa with a Christmas flyer—many colorful pages loaded with toys upon toys and more toys. Every single toy was circled on every single page. It was funny and cute but at the same, seemed like an opportune time to expand some horizons. Good positive actions not only speak louder than words, they make a better impression and leave a more lasting mark in the learning curve. Now, the grandchildren not only feel better about the children they are helping, they also feel better about themselves. So, do I.

After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb... These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb...

Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst.

The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Revelation 7:9, 14, 16-17

That’s according to a new policy brief issued by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Stockholm International Water Institute and the International Water Management Institute. It is discarded in processing, transport, supermarkets and kitchens. As much as 30 per cent of food, worth about $48 billion, is thrown away in the US each year. The current food crisis we are facing is not one of production, but one of waste. In Toronto, one in four food purchases ends up in the garbage. d vegetables in North America don't even make it onto store shelves because they're not pretty enough for picky consumers

When people toss food, all the resources to grow, ship and produce it get chucked too, including massive volumes of water. In the US alone, the amount of water loss from food waste is like pouring 40 trillion liters of water down the drain. The large quantities of wasted food translate into equally large amounts of wasted water. In the U.S. alone, it’s enough to supply the needs of 500 million families yearly.

For a high quality of life, every person requires approximately 135 liters (over 35 gallons) a day. The estimate includes cooking, drinking, hygiene, as well as industry, agriculture, and service sectors. Currently the world's largest water guzzlers in the developed world—Canada and New Zealand—consume 700 liters of water per person per day.

If anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward Matt 10:42
