Inasmuch as...

Jesus is only

coming back for

'His' church/kingdom

1 Corinthians 15:24

Where  does that... leave you?

We often marvelled at him. In 'church' Jeff would hold a hymn book. Any and every song to him was 'Jesus Love Me', so that's what he sang. It was a version particularly peculiar to him, bless his soul. He didn't know all the words. If he did he wasn't 'sayin'. However, he knew the tune if not all the words of 'Jesus Loves Me'. But he did know the lyrics 'Yes, Jesus loves me, the bible tells me so' and that worked for him.  That was the totality of the song for him so you would sure hear a fair share of that no matter what lyrics the rest of us were singing. In fact, no matter what song we were singing.

When the song leader would call for all to stand Jeff would often wave his hands, conducting us all to the right beat if not the right pitch.

We are an 'a coppella' sing from the heart church, as in the one New Testament church Jesus built (Ephesians 5:19).

During collection, he happily put his loonie in the basket with big smiles.

When I finished a sermon, upon returning to my seat, Jeff would say out loud, “Good Job!”, give a thumbs up and wave his hands. Did he understand the sermons? I highly doubt it however, he did understand encouragement.

THE LORD'S DAY

Inasmuch as...

Jesus only built
one church/kingdom/body
namely  - 'His'
Matt 16: 13-19; Eph 4: 4-6         Col 1:18

Who built the others?

The church of the living God,

the pillar and support

of the truth

1 Timothy 3:15

During Lord's Table  he was not adverse  to looking for the largest 'broken' piece of unleavened bread on the plate.  He always thanked  the passer.  With a big smile on his face he would turn and show us the piece he garnered.

There was one time when whomever prepared the communion, actually put a whole unbroken 'cracker' on  the plate. The passer in starting at the back row afforded Jeff first choice.

Sitting  beside Jeff as we normally did, we saw Jeff's eye's light up and a beaming big smile said it all. He had hit the jackpot! Yes indeed. Jeff turned and showed us how 'blessed' he was. Jeff in fact, had taken the whole 'unbroken' piece. 'Joy' for him.

Fortunately, whoever prepared it (communion) had also put two of the emblems on the plate. Such is the difference between a successful 'pass' and 'not'. In football one would say it was indeed a 'completed pass'. The Lord's Table emblems very emphatically represented 'church' to Jeff.  Eventually it got to the point where Jeff was unable to attend.  Bev would stay back with him and listen to the  study and service from my iPhone to her iPhone. When it was time for the Lord's table, at home she would place the emblem's on the table where Jeff  was seated. Jeff, recognizing what was before him would say 'church' and partake.

Jeff knew how to simplify things to a common denominator both suitable and safe for him. He knew his own comfort zones.

What's your calling card?

 Then comes the end,

when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father,

when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power.

When he was able to attend, Jeff loved going to assembly. He loved the singing and though he couldn't read  by and large except for things like his name and 'Cornwall' he rolled with what came his way.

DIRECTIONS

This is where Jeff actually worshipped for the more than 12 years with us.

A note on 'a cappella' singing in assembly.  At it's simplest it relates to 'voices alone'. In the New Testament (NT), instruments were not part of assembly - period. In truth, by both scriptural pattern and command, we are not to use instruments, except the 'instrument of the heart' (Hebrews 8:5) and "speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord" (Ephesians 5:19). 'Making melody' here means 'to pluck'. In this case the instrument of the heart'. Nowhere in the NT is there a smidgeon of reference to the church using or allowance for the use of instruments in Christian assembly. Neither by example, pattern, direct command, teaching nor inference. The only way you can get instruments in, is to 'add' them (strange fire) by your own volition not God's. So, you can either tune into God's music or write your own. 'Strange fire' anyone?  (Leviticus 10:1-3; Luke 6:46) As for me and my household... (Joshua 24:14-15), we will and must go with worshipping in 'Spirit and Truth' (John 4:21-24).

If you go with the Spirit, Truth is inherent (Spirit of Truth John 14: 17, 26; 15:26; 16:13). By those same scriptures if you go with Truth the Spirit is inherent. Inherent in Christianity is - the Truth and the Spirit. Where  the Spirit is - is Truth. Where Truth is - is the Spirit. If you go rogue without the Spirit, Truth or both, you cannot possibly worship in Spirit and Truth. The 'must' has been 'neglected' (Hebrews 2:3-4). You cannot cast both Spirit and Truth by the wayside to be trampled under foot. No wonder then in such case, that one cannot shake off the shackles and be set free. As Jesus said, you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free (John 8:31-32).
